The Luxembourg Au Pair Programme — A Guide for Host Families
Welcome to the au pair programme in Luxembourg. Opening your home to a young au pair is a rewarding cultural exchange for your whole family — and it comes with a clear legal framework designed to protect everyone involved. Below is everything you need to know as a host family in Luxembourg, and how AuPairLux supports you at every step.
Why Go Through AuPairLux
You Do Not Have to Navigate This Process Alone
Between government paperwork, legal obligations, and finding the right personal fit for your family, the process can feel overwhelming — that’s exactly where we come in.
- We understand the unique challenges of international family life — different cultures, languages, and expectations under one roof.
- Your family deserves a carefully chosen match, not a rushed placement. We take the time to understand your family’s needs before proposing candidates.
- We handle the complexity — paperwork, compliance with the law of 18 February 2013, and coordination with the Service national de la jeunesse (SNJ) — so you can focus on what matters most: welcoming your au pair.
- Every family is unique and deserves a tailored approach, not a one-size-fits-all process.
- Premium service means exceptional care, not just convenience — from candidate screening to post-arrival support and family counselling along the way.
- Peace of mind is worth investing in. With AuPairLux, you know every legal requirement is met and every detail is covered.
Law of 18 February 2013
The Legal Framework
The programme is governed by the Luxembourg law of 18 February 2013 on the hosting of young au pairs. It sets out a clear, mutual-trust-based framework between host families and au pairs, administered by the Service national de la jeunesse (SNJ).
Key Programme Rules
- Maximum duration of a placement: 1 year
- Au pair age in Luxembourg: the au pair must be between 18 and 29 years old at the start of the placement
- The application (host family approval, au pair approval, and hosting agreement) must be signed by both parties and submitted to the SNJ before the placement begins
- Processing of a complete application can take up to 4 weeks
Do You Qualify as a Host Family in Luxembourg?
- You must have at least one child under 13 in your household at the start of the placement
- If you have children under 6, you must provide evidence that their day-care is organised and guaranteed for the whole stay (via a childcare facility, a parental assistant, or a sworn statement)
- You must have no family ties up to and including the 4th degree with the au pair
- You must provide the au pair with a single, private room in your home — the minimum standard of au pair accommodation in Luxembourg
Host Family Duties
Your Obligations as a Host Family
- Provide food and accommodation for the full duration of the stay
- Pay a monthly au pair salary (pocket money) in Luxembourg — at least one-fifth of the Luxembourg minimum social wage — on a fixed date, without exception (including during periods when the au pair is unavailable)
- Cover the cost of the au pair’s language courses and allow sufficient time to attend them
- Grant at least 3 evenings off per week, 1 full day off per week, and 2 extra days off per month
- Limit au pair hours in Luxembourg to a maximum of 5 hours/day and 25 hours/week on average
- Take out civil liability insurance and register the au pair with statutory accident insurance; provide the SNJ with proof of health/accident insurance affiliation within 1 month of arrival
- Release the au pair to attend the mandatory SNJ information session in their first month
- Continue accommodation and food, and ensure appropriate care, if the au pair falls ill
- Allow SNJ agents access to your home for oversight purposes
- Inform the SNJ of any change in dates, cancellation, or issue, and request SNJ mediation in case of conflict
- Submit a projected weekly schedule, agreed and signed with the au pair, before the placement starts
Candidate Criteria
Au Pair Requirements in Luxembourg
- Aged 18–29 at the start of the placement
- Basic knowledge in English, French or German, plus a basic knowledge of a language spoken by your family
- In compliance with immigration rules on entry and stay in Luxembourg
- Available to attend language courses and the mandatory SNJ information session
- Not permitted to hold any other paid employment during the placement
Scope of Duties
Tasks an Au Pair Can — and Cannot — Do
The main purpose of the stay is cultural exchange, not domestic help. Au pair hours in Luxembourg are limited to 25 hours/week on average, mainly:
Typical tasks
- Helping children get ready, supervising homework, school runs, outings
- Playing with and having meals with the children
- Occasional evening babysitting
- Light tasks tied to the children: their laundry, light meals, tidying their rooms, small errands, emptying the dishwasher
- Keeping their own room (and bathroom, if applicable) tidy
Off-limits unless the au pair explicitly agrees
- Cleaning your private spaces (e.g. your bedroom or bathroom)
- Garage, attic, basement cleaning, or car washing
- Gardening
- Laundry or meal preparation for the family (rather than the children)
Paperwork
Supporting Documents — Preparing the Au Pair Visa in Luxembourg
With the help of AuPairLux, host families will need to prepare:
- Extended residence certificate (less than 3 months old)
- Criminal record extract for every adult in the household (18+)
- Evidence of day-care arrangements for children under 6
- Photos of your home, including bedrooms, with planned room allocation
- Municipal confirmation that the au pair can be registered at your address
- Landlord’s written consent (if you are renting)
Your au pair will separately need to provide ID, proof of residence, education certificates, a medical certificate, and a sworn statement confirming no family ties with your household — plus, for non-EU/EEA candidates, an au pair visa for Luxembourg.
Ending the Placement
A placement can end early, with immediate effect, in cases of force majeure or serious misconduct — otherwise, at least one month’s notice is required in writing, copied to the SNJ. If you’re considering ending a placement, the au pair has the right to an explanatory interview and may request SNJ mediation first.
