FAQ — Au Pair Luxembourg
Find clear answers about hosting an au pair, becoming an au pair and navigating the au pair programme in Luxembourg.
General
What is an au pair in Luxembourg?
An au pair is a young person, usually between 18 and 29, who lives with a host family in a country other than their own for up to 12 months. In exchange for room, board and a monthly allowance, the au pair helps with light housework and childcare. It is first and foremost a cultural exchange programme, not a job in the traditional sense.
Is an au pair the same as a nanny?
No. An au pair is not an employee, and is not expected to take full responsibility for a household. Duties are limited to a maximum of 25 hours a week of light domestic work and childcare, with at least two full days off. An au pair is a member of the family, not hired help.
What does an au pair actually do day to day?
General household duties (tidying, laundry, ironing, simple cooking) alongside childcare during a limited number of au pair hours a day, and occasional evening babysitting. A weekly schedule is agreed between the au pair and host family in advance.

What kind of families host an au pair in Luxembourg?
Most of our host families are young, busy professionals — often with an international background — who have one or more children and want childcare that’s more flexible than only a crèche or daycare centre. Families range from those with newborns to teenagers and have enough space at home to offer the au pair their own room.
What are the benefits of hosting an au pair?
Flexibility, above all. There’s no rush to collect a child by a fixed pick-up time, sick days at home are easier to manage, after-school hours are covered, and an evening out is simpler to arrange with a live-in carer available.
Where do you place au pairs with host families in Luxembourg?
Mainly in Luxembourg City and the major cities and surrounding towns, for instance Junglinster, Strassen, Bertrange, Differdange, Dudelange and Esch-sur-Alzette, but also all over the country in the cantons of Capellen, Clervaux, Diekirch, Echternach, Esch-sur-Alzette, Grevenmacher, Mersch, Redange, Remich, Vianden and Wiltz.
Where do your English speaking au pair candidates come from?
We’re particularly known for native English-speaking candidates from South Africa, where we also have a partner office in the Cape Town area, as well as Namibia and the USA. We also work with candidates from South and Central America, Asia, Russia, Ukraine and across Europe.
How does the au pair matching process work?
Every placement begins with a home visit and/or team meeting. If you’re interested in hosting, get in touch and we’ll arrange an appointment to understand your family’s needs before proposing candidates.
What are the AuPairLux agency fees in Luxembourg?
We charge host families a flat placement fee depending on the length and type of placement.
| Placement | Fee |
|---|---|
| Au Pair (7-12 months) | €1,700 |
| Short-term au pair (1–3 months) | €800 |
| 6 months au pair (4–6 months) | €1,200 |
| External partner agency fee (compulsory) | €1,000 |
| Rematch/visa service | €1,000 |
How much does it cost to host an au pair in Luxembourg, excluding agency fees?
In addition to any agency fees, host families should budget for the ongoing costs of hosting an au pair. Under the requirements of the National Youth Service (Service national de la jeunesse – SNJ), the family provides the au pair with pocket money of at least one fifth of the legal social minimum wage, as well as accommodation, full board and language courses throughout the stay.
At the current rate, the minimum pocket money is approximately €555 per month and is adjusted whenever the applicable social minimum wage is indexed.
The family must also register the au pair with the Social Security Centre (CCSS), which provides health and accident coverage. The applicable social-security contributions are calculated and invoiced directly to the host family by the CCSS. In addition, the au pair must be covered by private civil-liability insurance. If the family already has household or family liability insurance, it is advisable to check with the insurer that the au pair is covered for the entire stay.
Families should therefore budget for pocket money, food and accommodation, CCSS contributions, civil-liability insurance and language courses. They may also wish to provide a mobile phone allowance and cover other everyday expenses or family activities, although these are additional benefits rather than the core SNJ requirements.
Costs such as language courses and private insurance vary according to the provider, while pocket money and social-security costs may change following indexation.
If you have already found your own au pair, can AuPairLux still help?
Yes, in many cases. As a full-service agency, we can assist with the visa procedure provided your au pair has been fully screened by one of our partner agencies in her home country, and both parties meet the programme’s requirements. A discount applies to self-matched placements on our fee and the external agency fee.
For Au Pairs
Requirements, allowance, visas and how to apply.
What are the au pair requirements in Luxembourg?
You should genuinely enjoy children and have experience to show for it, whether through babysitting, school or daycare work, coaching, or studying childcare or education. You’ll need to be in good health, flexible on your start date, and available for a minimum of 6 months (EU passport holders) or 12 months (non-EU). We don’t place candidates who smoke, who are married, who have children of their own, or who can’t provide a clean criminal record. The au pair age bracket in Luxembourg is 18 to 29, and we place both young men and women.
Do I need a driving licence?
Not necessarily. Public transport is free in Luxembourg. That said, a category B licence can be an advantage if you’re placed with a family outside the city.
What au pair salary and benefits will I receive in Luxembourg?
Alongside room and board, au pairs typically receive a monthly allowance, full medical insurance paid by the host family, a contribution towards a language course (up to a set amount, once completed), a phone allowance, and a contribution towards travel costs.
Which nationalities can you place?
We work with candidates from South Africa and Namibia directly, plus a wider network across Europe, the Americas and Asia through partner agencies.
How to become an au pair in Luxembourg?
Candidates should contact us through our contact form. We also work with agencies affiliated to IAPA. If you’ve au paired before, get in touch and we’ll advise you.
Do I need an au pair visa for Luxembourg?
Yes, au pairs from outside the EU/EEA require a residence permit, and specific conditions apply.
What does it cost me to become an au pair?
Once accepted, there is a standard registration charge of €50. You’re responsible for your own passport, medical tests, criminal record check and transport to the airport, and typically for part of your airfare, alongside contributions from your host family. We’ll always tell you clearly what you’re expected to pay before you commit.
Why Choose a Luxembourg-Based Au Pair Agency
Why should I use an agency rather than arrange things privately?
Luxembourg’s administrative requirements for au pair placements can be complex, and getting them wrong carries real risk for both sides. We handle the screening, paperwork and matching so families can focus on their children, and so au pairs have support throughout their stay rather than navigating the process alone.
What makes AuPairLux different?
We’re the only au pair matching agency in Luxembourg, with premises in the heart of Luxembourg City, working closely with SNJ, immigration authorities, local municipalities and partner agencies abroad. Every family goes through a home check and income check; South African and Namibian candidates complete a weekend of training before placement. Once an au pair arrives, they have ongoing support from our team, including a contact number, invitations to social events, and help with language courses and visa questions.
Life With an Au Pair
Won’t having someone live with us mean losing our privacy?
It’s a common concern, and a fair one. We help host families and au pairs agree clear guidelines from the outset so that everyone’s need for privacy and personal space is respected.
What happens when the au pair’s year ends and a new one arrives?
We see the yearly change as a positive rather than a drawback. Children generally adapt within days, and each new au pair brings fresh energy, ideas and enthusiasm into the household.
Is an au pair treated like an employee?
No, an au pair is a member of the family for the duration of their stay, not domestic staff. Families who aren’t comfortable treating their au pair as an equal member of the household are better suited to another form of childcare.
